As the country sits back and watches the end of the U.S. Military’s operations in Afghanistan, Denis McDonough, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary, promises that the VA is here for all Veterans that need help.

The VA provides numerous health benefits for Veterans of the U.S. Military. If you qualify for VA healthcare, you can avail a variety of services, free of cost, to help you stay healthy and happy years to come.

This October, We Are One! aims to increase awareness about the VA health benefits amongst the SoCal community so all Veterans can exercise their right to access these benefits.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) – Health Benefits

VA healthcare is one of America’s largest integrated healthcare systems. It has more than 1,200 care locations and serves nearly 9 million Veterans each year.

To avail VA health benefits, you need to first check your eligibility. If you are available, you need to apply for healthcare. The VA takes about a week to process applications and will send you a letter in your mail with their decision.

Once you get listed, the VA will tailor a unique benefits package for you. This package will mainly include healthcare services to help treat any illnesses and injuries, prevent health problems in the future, improve your functionality and enhance the quality of your life.

All Veterans listed with the VA are eligible to receive healthcare coverage for most care and services, but only some will qualify for added benefits such as dental care. This depends on your priority group, your VA primary healthcare provider’s advice, and the medical standards for treating your health condition.

Here’s a list of preventive care services offered by the VA:

  • Immunization against infectious diseases
  • Counseling on genetic diseases
  • Health education
  • Health exams

Here’s a list of inpatient hospital services offered by the VA:

  • Surgeries
  • Kidney dialysis
  • Medical treatments
  • Acute care
  • Specialized care

Here’s a list of urgent and emergency care services offered by the VA:

  • Urgent or emergency care at some VA health facilities
  • Urgent care for non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses that need attention right away

The VA also covers other healthcare services such as:

  • Mental health services to treat certain issues like PTSD, military sexual trauma, depression, etc.
  • Assisted living and home healthcare
  • Prescriptions written or approved by a VA doctor

If you are a Veteran or know someone who is, please encourage them to apply for VA healthcare to avail all health benefits for Veterans. Click here to apply today!
