Every year, around 200,000 military personnel in the U.S. leave the uniformed services. But have you ever wondered where they go and what they do? How do they continue to sustain their own lives and the lives of their loved ones?
July is a great time to not only celebrate our country’s Independence Day but also to recognize the employment needs of Veterans and provide our support to them. For this reason, we celebrate National Hire a Veteran Day on the last Sunday of July every year to recognize the sacrifices made by our Veterans and help them sustain their livelihood by reminding employers to consider them when filling open positions.
A Little Background
National Hire a Veteran Day was first celebrated in 2017. The founder of the idea was Dan Caporale, a Marine Corps Veteran and founder of Hire Our Heroes, a national non-profit organization. National Hire a Veteran Day is celebrated to increase awareness regarding civilian employment for Veterans after the end of their military service.
The occasion is also a call to action for those who hire and those who apply. Employers all across the country are encouraged to hire our heroes since they bring leadership skills, tenacity, teamwork, dedication, work ethic, determination to succeed, and many other traits that are a must-have for most job roles.
How to Observe National Hire a Veteran Day
As highly trained and qualified individuals, Veterans are ideal for numerous trades. Even though the legislation protects Veterans as they step into the civilian workforce, it is not enough. The best way any potential employer can honor a Veteran is by hiring one!
Many skills that Veterans acquire in the military world transfer to the civilian world. Both small and large businesses can benefit from the talent that Veterans bring to the table. Regardless of the position, employers can find qualified candidates among Veterans in a range of fields such as:
- Cyber Security
- Information Technology
- Skilled Trades
To observe National Hire a Veteran Day, take a moment to honor our courageous service members of the U.S. military. Offer them your time and consultation regarding the civilian workforce. It is one of the best ways to show your support. Share their stories on social media and job sites such as LinkedIn using #HireAVeteranDay to increase their reach and connect them to potential employers.
